4. Make a list of 3 to 10 careers that seem interesting to you.
- Pro-Tip: If you don't know what a certain profession is, LOOK IT UP, do not just disregard it.
5. Navigate to the careers page on this website and/or on Naviance and learn more about the careers you chose.
- It is important to look at more than just how much each career makes. Some pointers include:
- Find out what someone in that career does on a daily basis.
- Find out what kind of education or training you need, and how much money it will take to get that training.
- Are there ways to enter that career straight out of high school? While in high school?
- What does a typical work week look like? Vacations and personal time?
- Where can you find work? Are most of the job opportunities in certain areas?
- Can you see yourself in that job and does it line up with your own values?
- Will that job leave you wanting or longing for more? For example, would you be happy at a desk job all day?
- If you have more questions, Google them (or look up the job on YouTube), contact the listed representative, or talk to your counselor.
6. After answering these questions, were you able to find a career you like? If not, repeat steps 4-5 with a different set of careers.
7. Now find out more about your chosen career.
- Contact your local representative, or even a national representative for that career.
- Figure out what steps you can take while in high school to pursue your chose profession.
- Explore other resources on this website or on the website to start pursuing your career. For example, start adding material to your resume (Naviance has a good resource).
8. If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to your counselor.
